While we were staying in Brooklyn we took a walk around park slope late at night to see what we could find in the way of thrown out food and we found lots. First bread outside a bakery door, next bagels, we now had plenty of bread so at least already I felt like it was a success, but I hoped we would find something to go with the bread. A few pizza places but mixed in with the pizza right off the shelf that they hadn’t sold was cleaning rags and things that made the food unusable. We managed a few things from one pizza place. We found a few grocery stores along the way with organic yogurt and pudding, cream cheese, vegan cream cheese, guacamole, humus, olives, desert cheese. A refrigerator full and bread for a few days. We didn’t reach home until close to 4am but when I woke up in the morning I had a bagel to eat which would have been in a landfill somewhere.
We have enough to eat for ourselves and enough to share with whoever we come across and we did come across people to share this food with. We stayed in the financial district over the weekend and were able to share with occupiers and others, friends, and people we met on the street who were hungry.
