Long Island Food Not Bombs getting ready to fill people bags with fruits and veggies

Yesterday we finally got Godzilla on the move again. So today we were off to our first action since coming to Long Island to fix the bus. We found out about Long Island food not bombs and an hour later we were on our way to meet them. This is the second food not bombs action we have been to since starting the occupy bus tour. The first one was at Tampa food not bombs were they served breakfast. This one is a little different, here they hand out food. Fruits, veggies, dairy, eggs, dry and canned goods, breads, and clothes. After they handed out food they also had a meal.

There were lots of tables set up and all the food separated into sections and you waited in line at each section. First I waited in the fruit and veggie line. Next the dairy, canned, and dry food line, then the bread line. Most of their food comes from whole foods and trader joes so I was so excited to be getting organic produce and whole grain breads. This is all food that would otherwise be thrown out, food not bombs reclaims the foods and then hands them out to people who can then take it home and cook it in their own homes through the week.

The cars came filled with boxes and bags and the volunteers lined up to carry them all to the right sections and then other volunteers were there to sort them all into groups, all the bananas together, apples, lettuce, bread, eggs, milk and so on and so on

Volunteers were ready to fill our bags with what we wanted. When it was my turn I looked at the fruit and veggies on the table and told them what I wanted from what they had available. I got mushrooms, strawberries, peppers, potatoes, spinach, arugula, onions, apples. That was just at the fruits and veggies section. I also got a can of chick peas some pasta, cheese, cream, and then a few loaves of bread.

After handing out food to people, hot food was brought out and put onto the tables and served. All vegan so I was happy, I could eat everything

It was really nice to be able to meet some of the volunteers who work so hard making this happen. Everyone of the people I met from the people standing in line to the volunteers working on the other side of the line, everyone had a story to tell and everyone was just as excited to hear our story. Another world it possible and all the people who we met today are making that possibility a reality by doing work like this. Taking the time to drive all over Long Island picking up food from stores where if it wasn’t for them it would end up being in a landfill somewhere. There had to have been at least 100 people there today picking up food and these were people who had jobs, not all I’m sure but the people I talked to worked but still didn’t make enough to get by and needed this food to be able to survive.

Within an hour all the food was nearly gone, within a few hours all the hot food served the place cleaned up and turned back to the way it was before, until next Sunday when food not bombs will come again and the lines will form, the cars will come overloaded with bags and boxes of food collected to help people who need it instead of wasting. A direct action, mutual aid, we are all part of the solution, this is just one small group, making a difference.
